The Nancy Zimpher Award for Best Partnership and the
Kenneth Howey Award for Contribution to Urban Education
have been established to recognize and honor outstanding
local partnerships that exemplify leadership in education
reform and urban education respectively. The Holmes
Partnership is committed to recognizing and rewarding
these important qualities in partnership initiatives.
| Nancy
Zimpher Award for Best Partnership –
Nancy Zimpher served as the first President of the
Holmes Partnership from 1996-2000, and was very
active in the movement of the Holmes Group, the
predecessor to the Holmes Partnership. Zimpher recognized
the importance of partnerships in the design and
implementation of teacher education programming.
The Holmes Partnership is a network of universities,
schools, and national professional organizations
working in partnership to create high quality professional
development and significant school renewal to improve
teaching and learning for all children.
Kenneth
Howey Award for Contribution to Urban Education
– Kenneth Howey was instrumental in the
establishment of UNITE, the Urban Network
to Improve Teacher Education. This organization,
an affiliate of the Holmes Partnership, was designed
to address the need for teachers to be specifically
prepared to teach in urban settings based upon
the understanding that teaching and learning in
urban schools is qualitatively different than
that experienced in other contexts.

These awards have been designed to stimulate the development
and institutionalization of partnerships among institutions
of higher education, local school districts, and local
teacher organizations working together to improve teaching
and teacher education. These awards are also intended
to emphasize the Holmes Partnership’s dedication
to using partnership as the vehicle for creating high
quality professional development and significant school
renewal.
